Famous London address enjoys bespoke roller blind solution

Hunter Douglas Blinds has supplied an innovative roller blind solution as part of the £8.9m refurbishment of one of the most famous business addresses in London.

The project to refurbish and extend the Wimpole Street offices of Royal London Mutual Insurance saw Galliford Try create 6,500 sq m of office space with Trehearne Architects designing a modern working environment within the historic business district.

The Trehearne designs presented a challenge for Hunter Douglas Blinds, with motorised and manual roller blinds specified to provide solar shading and anti-glare systems for the new scheme.

The architect and design team required blind boxes sunk into the ceiling void to create a pocket to house the blinds. Hunter Douglas worked closely with the design team with regard to the supply of the blind boxes and closure plates and then also liaised with other on-site contractors such as electricians, ceiling liners, plasterers, secondary glazers and the curtain wall installers to ensure the bespoke solution met the requirements of the project.

Such close cooperation with designers and other contractors is a characteristic of Hunter Douglas’s work. With the level of careful pre-planning that went into the 1A Wimpole Street project, Hunter Douglas’s team were able to ensure the motor cables were not visible and the blind boxes and closure plates sit flush with the ceiling line.

Hunter Douglas’s team was also able to ensure that some of the hardware for the blinds system was powder coated to a specified RAL colour to match decor and paintwork in the window reveals. As a result, for the completed solution on the fourth floor, the blinds system is cleverly concealed and fascia only become evident when the control switches are pressed.

With an established track record of product innovation, Hunter Douglas Blinds is the UK’s leading supplier of internal and external systems for the control of light and glare. It manufactures and supplies a wide range of solutions for a variety of schemes.
