Hunter Douglas Blinds is top of the class for £40m new school

A multi-million pound new school in Derby has opened providing state-of-the-art facilities for the 1,150 pupils and the wider community.

The £40m Noel-Baker School opened in September and the newly constructed site also includes pupils from St Martin’s special school and forms part of Derby City Council's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, the city’s biggest ever school building investment programme.

The Noel-Baker project also involves a separate sports and vocational centre which will make it an important focal point for the local community. Hunter Douglas Blinds were brought in to provide bespoke solutions for some of the site’s key buildings and areas, creating the right sort of innovative finish for the contemporary surroundings.

As part of the £50,000 project Hunter Douglas Blinds provided a number of different Side Guided EOS Roller Blind models to suit different requirements in different locations. The same main EOS component set was used throughout to allow for visual continuity across the project.

The specialist manufacturer also supplied 1800 OL Motorised Rooflights to complete the blackout requirements to St Martins Hall. A 3% screen fabric was used for the majority of the school to specifically control the glare.

Hunter Douglas’s blinds systems were installed along the transom line, below the top opening lights, to compliment the building's ventilation strategy. The blinds were also set to stop 70mm short of the window sill to allow air to flow in from the bottom opening lights, as well as provide easy access to the window handles.

The side guide wires were installed to act as a stabiliser for the blinds once the ventilation strategy was in operation. Chain retainers were also installed to all the manual blinds to help prevent accidental ligature to create the sort of truly bespoke solution that Hunter Douglas Blinds has become renowned for over the years.

Thanks to the advanced systems created by Hunter Douglas Blinds, the school now has a glare and ventilation strategy that works in unison throughout the building to provide a comfortable working environment for students and staff.

The Noel-Baker project is the first of two schools within the Derby Schools BSF programme to be completed by Hunter Douglas for Balfour Beatty.
